Frequently asked questions
Q- My student has never wrestled before, will he/she be able to keep up?
A- No experience is needed. We love working with new wrestlers and will teach to the level that they need to improve. For those with experience, we match up accordingly by size and experience level.
Q- Does it matter what school my wrestler goes to?
A- No. While we practice at XMS, the Saints program is a cooperative that was developed for those planning to attend Xavier or FVL high schools. The Girls-Only program is unique however and we encourage girls from any private or public school to join (see below). Middle schoolers typically wrestle with their school system
Q- How does the Girls-only night work?
A- Girls of all grades are welcome to come Sunday nights for a 1 hour session led by a female former collegiate wrestler and will teach to all levels. Girls wrestling is among the fastest growing sports in the US, and we want to encourage local girls to join!
Q - Where/when are practices?
A- Practices are held at Xavier Middle School in the gymnasium. Days/times subject to change but this was the 2025 schedule:
5-8th: Mon-Thurs 4-530pm
2nd-4th: Mon/Weds 530pm
preK-1st: Sunday night 5pm
Girls only: Sunday night 6pm
Q- My student is also in basketball but wants to try wrestling, is this possible??
A- We understand that kids this age tend to be in multiple sports and we want them to be able to try wrestling. When they get to high school, only a few of the many will play on the varsity basketball team while there are 13 spots for wrestling! We want to get kids involved and loving wrestling, and can work with you if your student is not able to make every practice.
Q- What about meets and tournaments?
A- 6-8th graders are part of the Appleton public school conference with meets on Tuesday nights at local middle schools, or at XMS. There are typically two multi-team meets for our younger wrestlers. Whether in middle school or elementary, wrestlers are paired against opponents of similar weight, age and ability.
Those who are ready to compete at the next level to go to tournaments, and we will recommend ones that are appropriate for your wrestler if they'd like. We however don't want those who are not ready to be discouraged, so tournaments so it is not required.
Q- Is there a fundraiser?
A- No, there is not a fund raiser for Saints wrestling. Registration fees, sponsorships and personal donations are used to pay for equipment/uniforms, mats, league fees/other expenses to help us give your wrestler the best possible experience.
Cost is $50 for preK-1st, $75 for 2nd-4th, $100 for 5-8th. (we want everyone who wants to wrestle to join so if registration fees are a financial hardship for your family, there is an option to waive fees)
Q- Does Saints wrestling share finances with Xavier Catholic or Fox Valley Lutheran Schools?
A- No. Saints is a cooperative team who is allowed to use XCS finance department for accounting and transparency purposes, which is why checks are made to "XCS/Saints Wrestling", but there is a separate account only for Saints wrestling expenses. No funds are taken from or given to either Xavier or FVL school systems.
Q- I'm interested in being a sponsor, coaching, or have other questions about the Saints organization, who do I contact?
A- Sponsors or coaches who have a player may indicate their choice during registration and will be contacted when registration is completed. Any questions should be sent to Saints Football and Wrestling director Peter Katz at foxvalleysaintswrestling@gmail.com
